FAQ - Organic Baby & Apparel Products

Q. Is all organic cotton the same?

A. No. Some organic cotton is actually certified, like all the cotton at Joy Organic. Each of our products bears a tag from the organic certifier. This certification shows our customers that we stand behind the organic practices that are used to grow this cotton and to manufacture it into the products that we sell.

Q. What does certified mean?

A. Certified means that an accredited agency or “certifier” has approved the methods that are used in the entire process of manufacturing our products as “organic”.

Q. Are all certifications the same?

A. All certifications are not the same. The company we use to certify our cotton is called Control Union Certifiers formerly Skal. They are known for their high level of integrity and involvement in the certified organic cotton industry. They are a company that we trust is providing us with proper certifications.

Q. What does Fair Trade have to do with cotton?

A. Fair Trade can apply to any product that is manufactured using people to do the work. The term is being used more and more in the area of agricultural products. Most people have heard of Fair Trade Coffee. Whenever field workers are involved, there is always the likelihood that they may not be working for fair wages or there could be poor business practices in place. Cotton is a crop that is harvested mostly by hand so many farm workers are involved in the process. Fair trade means that the workers involved in the growing and manufacturing process were all paid a fair wage and that their working environment is safe physically. A Fair Trade Company will make sure that their employees are cared for properly,  from their work hours and work conditions to their compensation.

Q. Are the dies safe for the environment?

A. The dyes that we use are all actually certified by the same company who certifies our cotton.

Q. Does organic cotton feel different from conventional cotton?

A. Not necessarily, but it will feel better to you knowing that with every garment you purchase you have saved our planet from a 5Lbs. sack of harmful pesticides.

Q. Is there a difference in the quality of organic fabrics?

A. Organic cotton tends to be made in very high quality factories. More money is invested in factories that produce organic cotton in order to maintain the integrity of the products that they are handling.

Q.  Is organic cotton more expensive than regular cotton?

A. The price is slightly higher, because there are so many controls used along the way. From field to store there are many inspections of goods and many practices adhered to. This alone can make the finished price a little higher.

Q.  How do you care for organic cotton garments?

A. We recommend that our garments be laundered as you would launder any other cotton garment. We ask that you consider the environment when choosing your laundry soap and make an eco-friendly choice.

Q.  Are there any health benefits from Organic cotton clothing and bedding?

A. Every day we are exposed to a huge amount of chemicals. Asthma and eczema are on the rise among children and adults. Using organic cotton will decrease your daily toxic load. Organic Cotton is naturally hypoallergenic.

Q. Why is Organic cotton better for the environment?

A. There are over a dozen different chemicals used in growing traditional cotton. When you make the organic cotton choice you are saving the earth from all of those harmful pesticides. Most cotton is now being grown out of the US where there are little controls over pesticide usage. The pesticides used in farming end up in ground water and run off into streams and lakes. It takes almost 5 years to clean up farm area where pesticides are used and much longer when ground water is contaminated. Organic farming uses natural substances to fertilize and protect crops from insects. Pests are also removed by hand which brings more labor to the farms and keeps the land free of harmful chemicals.
